I've been sick, and am now back among the living (at least mostly). My body finally decided to kick the sinus infection, I'd say I'm at 90% of normal now. Rut

So, in case you can't tell, I'm in a rut. The weight's not moving, my diet's still crap and the rest of my life isn't going that great either.
Anyhow, so I'm taking a break from blogging. I've been kinda bad with it anyway and, frankly, it's just one more thing in life to feel guilty about.

Not giving up entirely, just saying "I'll be back when I get my crap together."

Cleanse day 2

I feel good today. Yesterday I ate more than I wanted to, but I was having this battle between what I knew I needed to do and feeling deprived. Once I got to the end of the day, I finally formulated a plan for the whole high-raw, all vegan thing. I plan to eat 100% raw until dinner, have a salad, then have some cooked food, so long as it's at least 90% vegan (ie the music man made pancakes tonight and used 1 egg, and tha'ts ok, but not eggs, milk, and butter, yikes). That way I'm eating the bulk of my meal times as well as calories from raw, but still getting that cooked food warmth.

Breakfast:
fresh carrot/orange/peach juice with bulk fiber (150)

Morning snack:
banana (75)
almonds (100)

Lunch:

Today is day 1 of my cleanse. I'll post what I can, but I'm not really counting calories. Mostly guesses! I decided to eat high-raw, all vegan to start, and we'll see where that leaves me feeling. So far, so good. :)

Oh, a small point of clarity: I'm still consuming honey. It's not a "pure" vegan diet, but I mostly meant I'm not doing any dairy.

And THIS is where things broke down. I don't know what the hell came over me. Really, I don't. I just know that I'm so freaking HUNGRY and wanted a Blizzard. I decided to be "good" and eat a couple Samoas that the Music Man brought home from school. I ate five in the car.

Then I went to Target and Old Navy, got back to the car. And ate THE REST OF THE BOX! When I was scarfing down 14 and 15, I realized that there was no way I could keep that down, and it was a really strange feeling. I haven't purged in YEARS. I got home to a quiet house, and realized that I just couldn't do it. I didn't even want to, which is nice.

So here it is 7:23 pm and I'm STILL hungry. WTH? Seriously, what do you do when you've already eaten 2600 calories?

Now, I recognize that I'm probably working out a bit too much to eat as little as I was early in the week, but I honestly wasn't hungry. Now I am, and my body is fighting back, it REALLY wants to keep this weight. I'm starting a cleanse on Monday night, up to 90 days. I don't know if I'm just prepping myself for the raw vegan diet that I plan to keep for at least the first week (and perhaps through the whole thing, I don't know).

Uhhh....whatever that was:

Math-wise, I'm not going to make this weight loss goal. I've got 18 days to drop 5 lbs, and I'm not sure that's going to happen, even as much as I've been working out. I'm really nervous about eating too much because mathematically; 1350 is my upper limit even if working out this much. Typically, it's not bad but today I am hungry. And I know myself well enough to know that when I'm hungry, I actually NEED to eat. I did 3 hours and 15 minutes today, so I don't feel terrible about eating this much, but it makes me goal seem that much further away.

But in other news, I went to Ross last night after the gym. I found a Champion running skirt for $6.99. The ONLY one they had in any size was a small, but I figured I'd eventually get into it. Well, that puppy fits and looks pretty cute; I wore it to spin this morning. Loving it!

Another Brilliant Idea…

March 9, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

So I shot my mouth off today after coming up with another “brilliant idea.” I was reading Runner’s World on Sunday and saw an ad for the Air Force half and full marathon that they do at Wright Patt in September and thought “Hmmmm… well, if I’m really going to do the Disney Marathon in January, then I should have a smaller goal before then.” Technically, there’s a half in May up in Denver I could do, another here over Labor Day and the big one in Denver in October, but for some reason going back to the DYT to run appealed to me.

Maybe it’s the decreased altitude…

The other (more practical) thing is that I’ve sworn I’ll fly home for a weekend in September to see the kid brother play football. It’s his last year and (as so often happens when you move out when your youngest sibling is going off to kindergarten) I’ve really missed out on most things involving the child growing up and, though showing up to one football game ever doesn’t quite make up for that, I figure it’s a nice thing to do.

I’m not too nice, though, on the grounds that I want to see him play when it’s not snowing… hence the reason for the September visit. Hahaha…

Anyhow, I thought I’d kill two birds with one stone and do a race and a football game in the same weekend.

But who wants to run alone? That’s lame… Thus I recruited my kid sister and the hubby. For those who know me, Genny and I have never been, uh, close, but I knew she and Josh had been running a bit so thought it would be a nice gesture.

Dumbass.

I know better than to do things without proper research, ‘cause had I asked around I might’ve found out that they’re planning on doing the Flying Pig half in May which means that they’re going to have a significant leg up on my slow plodding ass who’s just hoping to finish the thing without being carted off to Good Sam. Sigh. Oh well, maybe the sib and sib-in-law will take pity on me when I keel over and at least find a cute paramedic…

Anyhow, on to the food…

Another Day, Another Trip to a Yummy Italian Restaurant

March 8, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

So today went ok… Brunch was kinda heavy, but I got a decent workout in and the world was a happy place.

And then Jess and I went to dinner. We were going to go to this Italian place where I’d scoped out the menu in advance and decided how to minimize damage.

Uh yeah, til we got there, found out it was closed and opted for plan B… Zio’s. I’ve only been there once and clearly didn’t appreciate the fabulousness of this place. A world where every appetizer involves fried goodness and cheese. The bread is warm and crusty. The pasta comes in troughs.

Sigh.

I feel my ass starting to expand.

I did try to research the caloric intake, but couldn’t find the restaurant info anywhere and, frankly, probably don’t reallllly want to know because if I did, well, I’m smart enough (or at least
I spend most of my life eating similar foods) to put for a solid guess.

But I won’t.

3/6--heather

I have arrived at a goal of getting below 130 lbs by March 29. This is a BIG goal, even for 5 little pounds, because it's 23 days away. That means I have to work out and torch at least 4500 cals a week at the gym (doable with my present schedule, so long as I don't get slack) and eat no more than 1350 per day (MUCH more difficult for me). So we'll see. I have a pair of pants that I want to wear to a concert that night, and we'll see if they fit. I can already zip them and whatnot, but my butt looks like, in the words of Olympia Dukakis, "Two pigs wrestling under a blanket". I also think that 5 lbs would put me comfortably in a size 6, which puts me 1 measly size away from my goal. So we'll see!

3/3--heather

I didn't have a green smoothie today, and I really missed it. However, my calories were so low! I was totally satisfied after 1000, but I pushed to get to that 1295 to keep myself in a mentally safe place (1000 was my "number" when I was eating disordered, so I don't ever go that low). Tomorrow is the big day, the day when I do two hours of cardio. I'll hit my first spin class in months in the morning, then hit weights and step when the Music Man gets home. I'm hoping there's enough room in child care in the morning so I can feel the burn in my bum from the hated and miserable spin class. Then I'll come home and rest for a bit before getting my butt kicked in weights and step. I'm a little intimidated getting back into my summer-like gym schedule, but if I want to make this final push, I gotta do what I gotta do!

2/28--heather

Self-sabotage is going on here, I just realized it. I've finally reached the point where I don't think I can actually get down to my goal size, so I'm just eating to keep myself where I am. Today, I went to Dillard's for the additional 40% off sale and found a gorgeous dress marked down to $30 from $169. It was a size 6, and it fit. Now, I know that I'm not there on my bottom half, but I have three pairs of size 6 pants that are snug, but close to fitting. Am I really that afraid of success? Is that why I stalled in October? The Look Alike is walking now almost all of the time, and that means that I can start taking her to the gym. That opens up anywhere from 4 to nine more hours of gym time per week. I know that I need to bump it up at least three to start making gains in fitness and drop body fat. I'm excited, but maybe I'm clinging to the "old me" so that I don't have to figure out who I am all over again.

Breakfast:
green smoothie (200)
jam and bread (175)

Lunch:
Olive Garden (1150)
I'd forgotten just how terrible the salad is, and of course I had three breadsticks. I might only have had two, but I calculated three, just in case.

Afternoon snack:
lara bar (110)
green smoothie (100)
chocolate (200)

Dinner:
I honestly don't know what all kinds of crap I ate. It was totally out of control.

Probably ate about 2500, couldn't really say. Maybe 2800, who knows. Tomorrow I get back to the gym and back to my goals, with this knowledge that I'm afraid of what being a small person is like. That's all.

2/27--heather

Today is Friday and, while I usually feel excited that it's the weekend and we get to relax some, this isn't the weekend that that will happen. Today the Music Man gets home a bit early. This is good, because I have to go to both the gym and the grocery store. Tomorrow, the Music Man has the monthly men's meeting at church in the morning, so I'll lose both my Saturday hours at the gym. He's bringing home my friend's daughter's to hang out with us. I'm supposed to have lunch with the girls in my Elijah House small group. Then I'll come home, hang out with the 5 kids for a few more hours. MM will take the girls and the Firecracker Princess over to church for the spaghetti dinner, and I'll stay home with the littles. Sunday I'm in the Monster's class at church. I really do love that time, but those kids are exhausting. Two year olds, they'll wear you out! Thankfully after that all I have left is step, then I can come home and rest for a bit before we gear back up for the week.

Funk was fun again. In fact, my Pilates instructor Pam said that she wanted to stay and "dance with me". Which would be ok, except a)this is a booty shaking class and she's my mom's age and b)I've only been once and am not very good. But the funniest part of this class is the dance moves. The Cabbage Patch, the Rodeo, the Hammer, Tootsie Roll, Grapevine, etc. It's lots of fun, but I haven't tried to do this in at LEAST ten years! But really, I'm enjoying it, and maybe in a few weeks I won't be so bad that I'd mind my Pam around!

2/20--heather

Yesterday was interesting. I went to the gym for my Thursday Pilates mat workout, and my instructor was out sick. Bummer. The gym manager came in and said that Pam wouldn't be in. One of the ladies asked him when he'd put a Friday evening class back on the schedule, and he said whenever an instructor said they wanted to teach then. I told him (somewhat kiddingly) that I'd be finishing my certification in about 6 weeks and would get back to him. He told me to do that, which excites me to no end. I'd love to really work H-A-R-D for the next 6 weeks, both studying and in diet/exercise and see where I get. I bet I could drop at least ten lbs, which is half of the total I'd like to lose. So here goes!

Food Choices... Not One of My More Coherent Posts

February 17, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

Here’s my office pet peeve… We all know I make crappy, high calorie food choices… but the fun thing is that those are, well, MY choices.

What I dislike is eating food assigned by others.

For example, if I eat mac and cheese and it’s bad, that’s my decision and it sucks.

When other people choose food that I’m not a fan of, I get cranky on the grounds that I’m now going to eat a bunch of calories and not even get the joy associated with a yummy piece of pizza out of it.

The reason for this tangent is that I don’t (usually) like grocery store cake. So one of my coworker’s birthdays is tomorrow and I was going to make cupcakes. To which the boss apparently decided he wanted to order a real cake.

So I suggest a couple places where at least the odds of having something good (even if fattening) goes up and I get vetoed.

Now one can say “just don’t eat it,” but yeah right… good luck with that!

Same goes for events where the food is preordered… I don’t mind when there’s the “hospitality buffet” and there’s some level of picking and choosing, but when people just bring your plate in and announce “here’s what you’re eating.”

Sooooo not a fan.

Ok, back to being a spoiled brat now. :o)

First of all, it's my friend Rachael's birthday. She and I have been friends since we were eleven, meaning she's known me almost 2/3 of my life. Happy birthday Rachael!

As a little view into my world, I log my food as I eat it. I don't usually total it until the end of the day, but I at least pop it in. Sometimes I total after my afternoon snack, like I did today. That's a good thing because, a few minutes after I left to hit my weights and step classes, the Look Alike erased my whole post and, being blogger, it autosaves. Nice. The good news is that I totaled out at 1000 calories after my afternoon snack, so I'll try to remember what I had all day:

Ok, so for the past two weeks I’ve started food logs, then lost track, then forgotten, then gotten backlogged…

So rather than piece together 800 notes, we’re starting over… Though clearly not with the best of habits, but I digress…

The "good" news is that my trial is over, yay! And while I'm pleased, it's a bit bittersweet. However, it buys me time, and that's a good thing while I'm in this home stretch to lose the last 20 lbs or so.

And while we're on the topic, let's talk about that. The accepted weight range by the doctors is 104 lbs-134 lbs for my height, 5'2". People are telling me that's too low, etc., but I think that's just because they've never seen me at that weight. Fair enough, I'VE never seen me at that weight! But when you look at a weight chart compiled by one who studies the health of indigenous peoples, the TOP end of the weight for my height is 99 lbs. I'd like to say that I think I could get there and be healthy and fit, but I'm not sure that's a possibility. What I really want to do is drop 20 lbs, reassess, and see if I need to lose a few or gain a few or stay where I am. Of course, this is all provided that I don't discover that I'm pregnant before I get there!

Who Says Mac and Cheese Doesn’t Fix Life’s Problems?

February 4, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

Ever have one of those days where you’ve completely fallen down the rabbit hole?

Yeah, that was today… A perfectly nice, happy, normal day until it all went to hell.

And not hell in that “Everything bad that could happen did” kinda way.

No, that would be way too normal.

I mean hell in that “one person said one thing that probably wasn’t really so bad, but then it made the rest of the day spiral into damn the world sucks and everything’s miserable and and and…” kinda way.

There are five ways out of a spiral like that: A sufficient distraction; working out; sleeping it off; booze; or mac and cheese.

Some people say that “eating your feelings only makes things worse.”

Liars.

Those people just haven’t found proper food. Hahaha…

Anyhow, after a crappy day in which I just wanted to curl up and cry for hours, I can proudly say that curling up with Kraft Deluxe made the world a better place and I’d resumed a Nic-level of cheer by the time American Idol came on.

Now what this did for the scale?

Yeah, I dunno about that, but I felt better and didn’t jump off my two-story roof, so isn’t that what counts? :o)

I'm back and getting back on track. The scale says I gained seven lbs while we were gone. Math wise, I might've gained two, but all the sodium and junk messed up my system, and I think I might be retaining water for the first time in my life--all my pants feel tight! Trip Food

Hello folks! I'm back from a weekend away with the Music Man. After four months of planning a surprise, I took him to Disney World. I have no idea how many millions of calories I ate while gone, but here's a relatively educated guess:

Saturday:
Breakfast:
cinnamon roll (250)
banana (80)

Lunch:
fried cheese (400?)
roast beef sandwich (700?)
fruit salad (100)

Afternoon snack:
grapefruit cake (500?)

Dinner:
1/2 cheese plate (400?)
filet with potatoes and cured veggies (600)
cake with custard and strawberries (350)

So Saturday we're talking about three thousand calories. Yipes!

Sunday is much, much worse:
Breakfast:
bagel and cream cheese (400?)
banana (80)

Morning snack:
strawberry shortcake (300?)

Lunch:
fish and chips (700?)

Afternoon snack:
shaved ice (250)
1/2 school bread (125)
Mickey ice cream sandwich (280)

Dinner:
1/2 cheese plate (300)
roll with butter (200)
french onion soup (250)
roasted duck breast and leg confit with haricot verts (skipped the sweet potato puree, it was foul) (700)
lemon tart with tangerine sorbet (400)

That's just a sample, those numbers could be w-a-y off. But if that's right, we're looking at FOUR THOUSAND CALORIES! Ay!

Monday:
Breakfast:
school bread (300)

Lunch:
buttered roll (150)
mushroom bisque with creme fraiche (300)
cobb salad (350)
2/3 ribeye with arugala and roasted potatoes (750)
creme brulee (300)

Dinner:
(and I use that term loosely, it was McDonald's)
cheeseburger (300)
small fries (230)
school bread (300)

Evening snack:
cake (300)

Yeppers, that's 3300. Wowza, I really need to get my tail to the gym!

I will brave the scale again in a couple of days; I'm not sure I could take the shock that awaits me now...

The Dress

February 3, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

I came home from work today and found a package on my porch. Not my Olympic ring… (which I’ve been ANXIOUSLY waiting for since I had to send back the one they sent me when I realized it was, um, the wrong ring!) Oh no, this box was bigger and could only be one thing…

My bridesmaid dress.

Sigh.

Perhaps a pipe bomb would have left me more excited.

Anyhow, I’m in my best friend’s wedding at the end of April and I knew from the get-go that I was going to have problems with the dress.

For starters, when we discussed colors forever ago, the list was all what my friend Alyssa calls “fairy colors.” Pale pink, peach, light green… All very spring.

Whatever. All very “I’m a size 4.”

Ultimately the color my dear friend chose was what could best be described as celery.

But not like the green part of the celery. The reallllly light part on the ends. This is unflattering for several reasons. Um, first off let’s start with the part where I’m gonna look like a cow.

That’s the biggest one. The second is more easily fixable… I’m going to look yellow. See, my skin tone doesn’t work with that kind of color… I come out looking jaundiced to be frank. Colors like that are best for those who are “Paltrow Pale” or “Fresh From Maui Tan.’

And then there’s the part where the dress itself makes me look like someone should be chasing me through a field to herd my ass into a van that says “Burger King.”

See, it’s silky / satiny / clingy. Allegedly a dress that should make one look thinner as there’s this extra material around the waist.

Yeah, that’s a cute thought created by skinny people, ‘cause in this case it ain’t true.

I’d like to say I used the dress as motivation to skip dinner.

But no.

I think I should just get credit for not laying on the bathroom floor and sobbing.

At this stage I have two options… get my ass in gear during the next two months…

OR

Hand the dress to my friend Jill’s pitt bull and tell Paige the TSA must have killed it when I flew.

We’ll see which I go for in April…

And The Aftermath

February 2, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

So it started off as a day in which I knew I was going to my friend Nicole’s for dinner, so my intention was to keep it light…

Yeah, that went to hell the second Monica and I had a KFC craving.

The good news is I learned you can calculate your calories at KFC.com. The bad is I didn’t bother to do that before I ate.

And then there was the dinner.

The good news is I actually cooked something. Lasagna… and it was yummy. Made a version where you replace most of the ricotta with a combination of cream cheese and cottage cheese. Theoretically it was supposed to be 280 calories a piece… less actually as I cut the thing into 12s not 8s.

That was until I added another layer and decided that only crazy people would top an ENTIRE lasagna with a QUARTER CUP of mozzarella cheese.

I sneeze more than that.

Oh… and I definitely enjoyed cupcakes and breadsticks with the rest of dinner, so clearly all around not a good day.

And, best of all, I got crazy busy and blew off my afternoon workout.

For the second day in a row.

Officially making me a deadbeat.

February 4--heather

Today I got my crown for the implant, and I'm so stinking happy! For the first time in memory, I have a full mouth of healthy teeth. Isn't that great?! OK, it might not seem like a big deal to those of you (ahem, Nikki) who have never had a CAVITY, but for someone with four root canals and an implant, it feels amazing. From nine until 25 I literally couldn't chew using my back teeth because my molars were just circles of teeth with nothing in the middle. Yeah, seriously. It cost about $15,000 out of pocket, but really, it's been worth every penny.

As I was about to leave, I asked when I was due for a cleaning. Apparently that was last month (ay), and she said she could get me in RIGHT then because of a cancellation. Woohoo! It wasn't a lot of fun, but she said I obviously do a good job brushing and flossing because I had no cavities, no plaque and a leeeeetle tartar on front bottom teeth where apparently it's really common to get it.

Did I say yay?

Yay!!

I Might Kinda Like Morning Workouts

January 30, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

It’s a conclusion I come to every once in awhile… one that I eventually fall off the wagon from, but such is life… I kinda like working out in the morning.

Of much surprise to many people (largely based on my perpetual tendency to be late), I really am a morning person. I tend to be up before 6 for no other reason than I like to lay around, read a book, catch up on my DVR, etc.

Well this morning I got motivated to ditch the house early and had two options: go to the office (hahahahaha… now THAT’S funny) or do a quick workout.

One of the bonuses of working at the OTC, of course, is weight room access… because while you can easily talk yourself out of a drive to the gym in the cold and dark, it’s much harder to convince yourself that you can’t take a three minute detour (and only that long because of the speed bumps!) across complex to the weight room.

So I didn’t have much time, but am always amazed at how much even a quick trip to do something makes one feel better later.

(Of note, I also remembered that Friday at that hour is when my athletes have my morning training session, so just when you think you’re being productive you realize those guys have been there for at least an hour, so perhaps you’re not quite that good after all, but still…)

Fortunately I made it back post-work too, so did later get the rest of the workout in.

Ok, fine, the reality is the scale’s not moving, so I’m trying to find something to be happy about and it’s clearly not my diet…

February 2--heather

In case you're wondering why my rice cake values are always different, well, that's because I've discovered that I sort of enjoy them. They're a bit hard to come by these days, so I buy a few varieties. The 40 calorie ones are white cheddar, the 50 are caramel, and the 60 are "chocolate". I thought it might help curb the chocolate craving I've developed, but alas, they just make it worse in their impostor status. I'm working on a way to make it more chocolaty, though.

January 31

It's all a guess, honestly, except the green smoothie. Today was Elijah House graduation, and it was a-l-l day long (well, 10:30-3:00), then I went to the mall to decompress. As I was about to leave, I ran into an old friend and she and I talked for over two hours! I didn't get home until 7:15, but it was ok. For me at least, the Music Man had the kids by himself from 9:30 am until after 7!

The Day the Key Broke

January 25, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

So, after yesterday’s food frenzy, I resolved to have a better day today. Um, until my friend Jess called me for lunch.

I’d nearly forgotten that I’d called her to see if she wanted to grab a drink after she got off work (she had a game that night) and she’d said she couldn’t but wanted to do lunch… which is never a good thing for the diet.

And thus I suggested Extreme Pizza which I thought, at least, could get me away from any restaurant with a bread basket.

And since EP is in the same complex as my gym I thought I’d get a workout in.

Right… until I left for the gym, realized I’d left something inside the house and promptly had my key break.

(AND NO… THERE WASN’T A SPARE IN A ROCK OR THE CAR OR WITH A MOUSE…)

So, an hour later I was now $59 in the whole to the locksmith and later for my afternoon than I intended.

After talking to Jess, I realized that I did have about 15 minutes before she’d get there for lunch, so in my frantic attempt to do SOMETHING not crappy, I went to the gym, got on the treadmill, jacked the speed up at least a bit from usual and ran for a mile.

And then I went and ate crap.

But the good news is I did go back to work out afterwards. And dinner was out of a frozen box to minimize the complete damage at least.

Well, kinda…

Breakfast
Two slices Orowheat (180)
Margarine (60)
Egg (70)

Workout
1 mile run (117 calories burned)

Lunch
Slice of cheese pizza (460?)

Workout

Dinner

And Then Monica Threw A Party

January 24, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

Really it was an unproductive day all around... lots of good intentions that got interrupted by an afternoon surprise birthday party. But I suppose at least I got a workout in. (Um, for what that's worth.)

Breakfast
Pancakes (590)
Syrup (100)

Lunch
2 Skyline burritos (770)
*Ok, well kind of two… really what happened is I overfilled one and so I took all the goo that came out and scooped it into another tortilla… smart, right? Ok, no. Whatever.

Snack (Or Mon’s Party)
2 Woodchucks (360)
Piece of cake (250?)
* I can’t even tell you what kind of cake it was. White. But it tasted different than that. All I know is I didn’t eat all of it and it was a square piece, other than that, I have no idea.
Sopapilla (175)
* No stuffing on this one and they were kind of mini. As they were about the size and consistency of a Pillsbury crescent roll, that’s what I’m going with. If I’m wrong, oh well, at least I didn’t hit the buffet.

Workout
Here’s my real achievement… I drug my ass from the party to the gym. At which point I thought maybe had I drank more I would’ve gotten more accomplished, but that’s an experiment for another day! (Hahahaha…)
55 minutes (310 calories burned)

Dinner
Mac and Cheese (990)
Hot dog (100)
* Ok, bad, but worse is I watched Miss America while I did it!

Nikki, you're so welcome! But I told you it wouldn't stick, I'm back up to 138.6. I can't complain TOO much, since that's still 6 lbs in 12 days, but certainly not what I was hoping for.

The goal is to get down to 135 by next Friday (when we leave for Patton's trip), which seems reasonable to me. We'll see if I'm willing to put in the work, that's where the rubber meets the road!

Thanks Heather

January 23, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

So, a quick note to Heather… thanks for the fact that your ridiculously obnoxious weight loss motivated me to get off my ass today.

After a crazy long day in which I never saw sunlight, I found myself leaving the office in the cold and snow about an hour later than intended.

I wasn’t overly motivated to go work out and was going to blow it off (again) until I read Heather’s blog.

Which pretty much guilted me into going for a run on the grounds that “Well, I may not be losing any weight, but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna go home and sit and get fatter.”

I went over my calorie allotment for the week by 10 calories, so I feel pretty good about that. I did a little extra fidgeting to make up for it. :D

Gosh, this month has gone both really quickly and totally slowly. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I can't believe it's already the 24th. On one hand, I have no idea where this month went. On the other, the Music Man's trip is still two weeks away and feels like a lifetime because I'm so excited. Sigh.

Day 2 on the Running Wagon

January 21, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

So I returned to the treadmill again today. No less unpleasant, really. But I did up it to 2.46 miles which is something. (Not much, but something).

My friend Mac once said that the process itself never gets better, but you train to become more accustomed to misery and thus prolong your exposure to suffering.

Gosh, doesn’t that motivate you to go bust out a marathon?

Speaking of which, time to fess up that my friend Christiana is trying to get me to do the Disney Marathon next January.

We’ll see. My friend Caroline did it last weekend and it’s supposed to be a lot of fun… or, fun for a marathon anyway. Her only real complaint was that it’s so large it’s a logistic clusterf*&^.

Oh, and there’s no beer at the finish line which is always a disappointment.

Though, for fun, I advise checking out the following video Cree sent me that she found on YouTube...

The funnnniest part of this video is the ice bath. HYSTERICAL!!! As an occupational thing, I'm very well aware of ice baths and have heard the tales, seen the physical thing over in the Recovery Center, but never had the fun of doing this awful awful thing to myself.

(NOTE: I asked around regarding whether ice baths really are this bad and was given a resounding YES!)

Anyhow, we’ll see what I think of the concept of the marathon later in the year, but gives me something to think about while suffering other than a blatant desire to get skinny. I like the idea of being able to say you did it. Not for time or anything special, just to say I survived.

Actually, you see that on resumes in the Springs. Under “Activities” people will write “Pike’s Peak Ascent or Marathon Survivor.”

No joke.

Then again, if I ran 13.1 miles up a mountain or 26.2 up and down, that’s how I’d greet people: “Hi, I survived the Ascent.”

(NOTE: While I come up with crazy ideas, that was nothing more than a random tangent, but crazy and stupid are not two words that are interchangeable. We will NEVER hear me even vaguely consider such nonsense).

I digress.

Anyhow, so the treadmill bonding returned. Woohoo.

Oh… and, even more important… I HAVE DRUGS!!!

Got my Cipro filled at Walgreen’s last night.

For those with good memories or (like me) just a knack for useless trivia, Cipro became most famous for it’s use treating anthrax.

This scares me more than a little, but I suppose if it can kill anthrax it can kill bronchitis.

Or me.

Here’s to hoping for the former.

Ok, moving on to food…

Breakfast
Egg McMuffin (280)
*Of note, I like a good Egg McMuffin and see nothing wrong with it. My coworker mocked my muffin, said 280 calories is a ridiculous amount to eat for breakfast and then claimed that her sopapilla (sp) was wayyyy healthier. Uhhhh, Heather, you wanna take that one?

Lunch
Pizza bites (300)

Workout
2.46 miles on treadmill (281 calories burned)
13 minutes on bike (76 calories burned)

Dinner
Mac and cheese (780)
Mayo (80)
Hot dog (100)

Total calories: 1540

Weight: 70.2kg

Back to the Running

January 20, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

Something Heather said in a blog awhile ago struck me: “If I want to lose weight like I did last summer, I need to eat like I did last summer.”

(Paraphrased, of course as I’m too lazy to look it up.)

To which I realized… you know, the only time I ever have a bat’s chance in hell at losing weight has been when I run.

Now, granted, I haven’t ran since the end of December and, up until now I’ve had the same lame excuse.

“Blah blah, I’m sick, blah blah, can’t breathe.”

Doesn’t life suck?

So today I decided to suck it up and get on the treadmill.

Look, running when you can’t breathe never killed anyone, right?

Yeah, that’s what I thought.

So I put in my two miles. At which point I realized that two miles at 6,500 feet with bronchitis is not a pleasant experience. Now, I’m not one to whine about living at altitude and I really dislike people who do because the reality is that you adjust. It’s harder on your lungs, true, but after eight years you kinda figure it out.

That said, if you compromise your breathing in any way out here you are screw-ed.

Breakfast
Two slices Oro Wheat (180)
Egg (70)
Margarine (60)

Lunch
Ravioli (620)
Breadsticks (700)
Fettucine side car (500?)
*So we were completely unmotivated to work after the inauguration and thus we went to the Olive Garden. I probably would’ve gone easier on the breadsticks had it not taken 40 minutes to get the food.

Workout
Two mile run (225 calories burned)
20 minutes on stationary bike (110 calories burned)

Dinner
Frozen lasagna (300)
Skinny cow (150)

Total calories: 2580

Weight: 70.2kg

So It’s Been Awhile

January 19, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

Ok, so I haven’t blogged in a while and I’m backlogged to boot. Decided to cut down on my catching up as really it’s all the same… Variations of ok-bad eating combined with life on a bike and I’m still sick.

I reintroduced rowing last week which was a good thing, though it pains me to see that I’m anywhere between 18 seconds and a full minute slower than usual due to my crappy lungs.

Speaking of which, consulted a doc (ironically from Heather’s neck of the woods) and the thought is that I originally had the flu which turned into a secondary bacterial infection of bronchitis.

Which would explain why the shaking, aches and fever stopped, but I’m breathing kinda like a 70-year-old smoker.

Fun, right?

So last week I ran into a triathlete friend of mine while in the gym and we were discussing the fact that I don’t really cook… at least nothing that involves a recipe anyway.

He gave me a little hell and an encouraging pep talk that I should cook more often, but cook what I really like to cook.

Thus I decided that once a week (baby steps people) I’m going to try and fix something that actually involves directions not affiliated with a blue box and a kraft label.

Anyhow, I fixed quiche for breakfast on Saturday and have been eating it every morning since.

Truly, who doesn’t love quiche? Ok, probably Heather, but I’m a fan.

And no, don’t even ask if I made the crust. Let’s not be silly…

Gotta do better today!

So I've discovered that the less I eat dairy, the better I feel. Well, not so much that, but the inverse. When I have dairy, I feel icky. I woke up this morning so congested and disgusting. I haven't figured out how unfermented dairy affects me in other ways, but the muculence is so foul that I am pretty much convinced that it needs to be in my diet in veeeeeery low quantity.

Oh crap. That's all I have to say about today. Have you seen the commercials for the new Weight Watchers Momentum program? The Day I DID Go to the Gym

January 11, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

So I still feel like death warmed over. Other than my excursion to Tony’s Friday night, I’ve pretty much laid on my couch all weekend.

Turns out the fever and the shaking and the high heart rate, aches and general malaise were all a warmup for the actual cold thing itself. I’m not sure if this is good or bad, but anything beats constantly thinking you’re going to pass out, so that’s something, right?

Or maybe not, but at some point tonight I pried myself off the couch and attached my ass to a bike. It wasn’t too awful and at least I got something done.

But now I want more drugs.

Sigh.

Oh… on a random note, I’d like to take out an ad for how FABULOUS the Skinny Cow chocolate ice cream cones are. Honestly, my new favorite thing in the world!!!

January 17

I really didn't think I'd be able to stay in my calorie range this week because of the terrible start I got on Sunday, but I'm happy to say that I made it this week. My calorie cycling didn't exactly work because of the Sunday mistake, but I did manage to lose 2 lbs. and stick to it pretty closely. I was pleased with that, and can't wait to actually get back to the calorie cycle this week. Monday is a holiday for the Music Man and I'm totally jazzed to spend a few hours at the gym.

Tonight MM asked me if I wanted to go out to dinner and I told him I had to decline the Chinese buffet because I'm being really serious about dropping wight right now. He snuck off to the other room and called my Music In-laws and asked them if they'd watch the kids Monday night to he could take me to a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, wasn't that sweet? I can't wait to try a new place!

The Day I Almost Went to the Gym

January 10, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

Seriously? I’m OVER this being sick thing. I hate it.

I hate it for all the normal reasons, but mostly I hate it because I’m not getting anything done. Completely 100% unproductive.

So today I resolved that I would work out if it killed me.

Yeah, that didn’t happen. Somewhere around 6 o’clock I swore I was going to get up and go to the gym. Because even if I didn’t have it in me to run, row or lift, I can almost always convince my legs to peddle.

Then I started doing some math. I hadn’t eaten since breakfast which I was ok with, but I knew I’d probably need something for the old gullet before I worked out. I was guessing some string cheese and wheat thins would take the edge off. But that would clock in at around 150-200 calories.

Now, I already felt like crap, so clearly this wasn’t going to be a long workout. At best I was going to burn 250-350.

Minus the 200 calories I needed to eat just to motivate myself off the couch.

Add in the fact that it’s cold and dark outside and you come up with absolutely no reason to go anywhere.

It sounds like a cop out, but it’s actually something I stole from a coach friend of mine in the office.

A couple weeks ago I had a party to hit after work. I got caught up with stuff and was trying to figure out if I was going to have time to go to the gym beforehand, but first I clearly needed a snack.

In the form of, um, the leftover Papa John’s in the fridge.

So I walk in to Eddie’s office pondering about whether I can squeeze a row in before the party and he looks at me like I’ve lost my damn mind and says “Skip the workout and throw away the pizza.”

At which point it dawned on me: “HEY IDIOT… Though you should work out for all the normal reasons, from a caloric perspective, he’s right. You can save yourself an hour by dumping the pizza in the trash can and bypassing the gym entirely.”

Now granted, one would be better off dumping the pizza AND going to the gym anyway, but perhaps that’s a lesson I’ll learn another day.

On to the log…

Since When Doesn’t Grease and Booze Improve Your Health?

January 9, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

I gave up today. Threw the towel in to the sick gods and said “Screw it, you win.”

Yup, I stayed home sick. A real productive day too, complete with laying on my couch and watching Grey’s.

My friend Linda, however, was in town from Boulder and, as I hadn’t seen her in a year or two, I agreed to go to happy hour even though I could barely walk for longer than 30 seconds without my heart completely going nuts and me generally wanting to die.

That said, whatever, I wasn’t planning on moving off the barstool, so figured I’d be ok.

And I was.

Perhaps now rounder, but not dying, so hey…

Another Day of Being Sick

January 8, 2009 – Nicole’s Food Log

I’m officially sick. And hating it.

I woke up this morning, drug myself to the bathroom and discovered I was running a fever.

You know what the only thing better than bringing out a thermometer for the first time in years is?

The fact that your mother isn’t there to say you don’t have to go to school. I tried, though. I called our office manager to ask if she knew what was on the agenda for the staff meeting … our first in months as the boss never ever does group meetings.

The thought was if I mentioned how bad I felt and the fever and whatever I could come up with that she’d encourage me to stay home.

Right. Mon has the same cold and her attitude (as expected) was pretty much “I could give a shit.”

Now, I’m a big girl and can handle calling in sick without having my hand held.

That said, I’m also smart enough that I’d be in for a day of trash talking behind my back because if other people can get off their death bed to make it to the meeting, why can’t I?

Sigh.

Jan 14--Day of the crown

I don't mind going to the dentist. Isn't that weird for someone who has had four (fifth today) crowns and root canals in the last four years, plus an implant? And don't even get me started on the debridement, I think that was the worst of all. I never went as a kid, so I didn't have that fear that people develop as children. Thankfully, the Firecracker Princess LOVES going to the dentist so far, and always asks if she can go along. The Music Man goes on Monday and is none too pleased, but I think that's because he's getting two cavaties filled.
